The Soil Tunnel is an educational outreach project of the District. It is a hands-on model of the composition of soil, geared toward elementary age children in traveling display form that children can actually crawl through and get the feeling that they are underground. This project has been copied by many other districts, but we were one of the first. We are particularly proud that our tunnel went to Washington, to be set up on the National Mall, for the Soil Survey Centennial Celebration. We are now working with 4H, Ag in the Classroom, and the Cape Cod Conservation District and have a slightly different tunnel design than the one shown here, and have rewritten the curriculum to fit better with the MCAS testing. Anyone is welcome to arrange to use the Tunnel, but there will also be workshops for teachers to attend and learn how to use the Tunnel as a better teaching tool. The Tunnel has a very full schedule during the school year and visits for approximately a week at each school that requests it (A small fee of $25 per week is requested in order to keep the Tunnel and materials maintained). The tunnel has been used in over 100 area schools and thousands of children have enjoyed the experience. If you would like to book a time for your school to use the soil tunnel, contact the District Office at 508-295-5495, extension 144.
The Soil Tunnel pictured here, with some modifications is now a permanent display at the Marion Natural History Museum, located in the Elizabeth Tabor Library, 8 Spring Street, Marion, 508-748-2098.
